Space Samurai — The Succession Plan

Angelic Pictures announces:

Angelica “Lady-Otin” Sirotin Named Executive Producer & Heir Apparent

THE TRUTH ABOUT HOLLYWOOD SUCCESSION:

George Lucas didn’t just hand Star Wars to anyone. He groomed Kathleen Kennedy for 30 years.

Steven Spielberg didn’t randomly pick a successor. He built one from scratch.

Today, I’m doing what they did. But I’m doing it publicly. Transparently. Strategically.

THE ANNOUNCEMENT:

After 29 years in this business and 23 movies under my belt, at 67 years old, it’s time to think about what comes next. Not just for me, but for everything we’ve built.

Angelica Sirotin is now my protégé and successor-in-training.

I’m not retiring tomorrow. But I’m not going to be here forever either. So I’m doing what my mentors did for me… passing on what I’ve learned while I still can.

WHY ANGELICA:

People ask me: “Why her?”

She didn’t go to film school.

Her family isn’t in the business.

She hasn’t been doing this for decades.

But the first time we talked about Space Samurai, she asked different questions. Not about the budget or the plot. She asked about the journey that led me to create it in the first place. She asked about my 29 years of making movies. She wanted to know about the evolution of cinema itself, from silent films to talkies to modern blockbusters. About my ancestor, Sir William Sleeman, who fought the Thuggee cult in India. About the stories my grandfather told me, that his father passed down to him, that shaped who he became as a USN Sailor, and who I became as a 3rd generation San Diego Police Officer. About why Space Samurai mattered to me personally.

She sees what I’ve been trying to build all along.

When Spielberg chose Kathleen Kennedy as his assistant, people were confused. When Lucas later trusted her with Star Wars, they were shocked. Now she runs it all.

Sometimes you just know when you’ve found the right person. Not because of their resume. Because of how they think.

That’s all I can really explain. The rest will show itself over time.

THE KATHLEEN KENNEDY PARALLEL:

Kathleen Kennedy started as Spielberg’s assistant in 1979.
Nobody understood why he kept her so close.

By 1981, she was producing Raiders of the Lost Ark.
By 1982, she co-founded Amblin Entertainment.
By 2012, she was running all of Lucasfilm.
Today, she controls a $4 billion franchise.

Angelica Sirotin started with Angelic Pictures in 2023.
By 2025, she’s Executive Producer of a Universal trilogy.
By 2028, she’ll be running her own slate.
By 2030? That depends on how fast we move now.

You don’t need to know her resume.
You need to know I’ve chosen her.
That should be enough.

THE DIFFERENCE:

Most directors hire producers. I’m building a successor.
Most producers manage projects. Angelica will manage an empire.
Most companies have employees. We have a dynasty in formation.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR INVESTORS:

When you invest in Space Samurai now, you get:

  • Partnership with proven experience (me)
  • Partnership with future leadership (her)
  • First-look at projects she’ll Helm
  • Ground floor of the next major production company
  • Access to someone who’ll be here for the next 50 years, not just the next 4

This is what smart money looks for… succession planning that ensures returns for multiple generations…

THE PROTÉGÉ PROGRAM:

I’m teaching her what my mentors taught me. Not in a classroom, but in real situations.

She sits in on the Universal calls. She’s there when we negotiate with brands. She sees how deals really get made… not the Hollywood fairy tale version, but the actual messy process.

What I’m really trying to pass on:

  • How the studio system actually works
  • The relationships that took 30 years to build
  • The mistakes I made so she doesn’t have to
  • The difference between making a movie and building a business

It’s the same apprenticeship model that’s worked in Hollywood for generations. Spielberg learned from his mentors. I learned from mine. Now I’m passing it forward.

She’s not just watching. She’s already contributing. Helping to close deals. Building strategies. Making it better.

That’s how you know it’s working.

THE TIMING:

I’m 67. I’ve got maybe 20 more years of full throttle in me.
She’s got 50+ years ahead of her.

The Space Samurai trilogy is the bridge.
I’ll direct the first one.
We’ll co-direct the second.
She’ll be a “Helmer” by the third.

By then, she won’t need me. She’ll BE me. But better.

THE VISION:

Someday (not tomorrow, but someday) I’ll step back. When that happens, Angelica will inherit not just a company, but relationships and opportunities that took decades to build.

The Universal connection. The Vendor-Affiliate status. The project slate. All of it.

But I don’t want her to just maintain what I built. I hope she’ll make it bigger, better, different. She already sees opportunities I don’t: new technologies, new markets, new ways of telling stories.

That’s the point of succession. Not to preserve the past, but to build the future.

Kathleen Kennedy didn’t just keep Lucasfilm running. She transformed it. That’s what good successors do.

By the time Angelica takes over, she won’t need my approval or anyone else’s. She’ll have earned her place through her own work, her own relationships, her own vision.

That’s not a gift. That’s how it should work.

THE BOTTOM LINE:

Hollywood talks a lot about “fresh voices” and “new perspectives.” But mostly, it’s the same people making the same decisions.

We’re trying something different. Building from within. Training the next generation the old-fashioned way… through apprenticeship, not theory.

When you invest in Space Samurai, you’re not just backing a movie or even a trilogy. You’re backing a transition. A future. A continuation of something that will outlast all of us.

That’s how the best companies survive. They plan for tomorrow while executing today.
